Shelley and Frankenstein - Part 1
Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus was published anonymously on the 1 st of January 1818 when Mary Shelley was 20 years old.
It was published in three volumes by Lackington, Hughes, Harding, Mavor & Jones.
Mary Shelley’s name does in fact appear on the second edition, but this was published in France and not until 1823.
A revised edition in one single volume was published by Henry Colburn & Richard Bentley in 1831. This was then followed by a two volume version, published in Philadelphia by Carey, Lea & Blanchard in 1833.
Following the success of Frankenstein, Richard Brinsley Peake’s Presumption; or the Fate of Frankenstein - which Shelley herself saw - was one of six different stage versions performed in 1823 alone.
Mary Shelley wrote to Leigh Hunt (a critic, essayist, poet and writer) on after seeing the drama, saying “lo and behold! I found myself famous.”
Frankenstein was made into perhaps its most famous film version in 1931. The script for the movie was in fact adapted from a play version, itself adapted by Peggy Webling.
This classic big screen version was made by Universal Pictures, and directed by James Whale.
In the original book, Frankenstein had the first name Victor, however this was changed to Henry for the film.
The already famous Bela Lugosi was originally cast as the monster for the film. When he declined the role, the director instead cast a then largely unknown actor by the name of Boris Karloff.
